In today's fast-paced world, chronic exhaustion has become an all-too-common experience, especially in high-demand environments like healthcare, IT, education, and leadership roles. Understanding the signs of exhaustion and integrating self-care practices into your daily routine is crucial for maintaining overall well-being. This guide explores five key aspects of a misaligned steady state, offering practical self-care tips to help you optimize your steady state for more energy each day..
What It Is:
A misaligned steady state often begins with a profound sense of fatigue. It's more than just feeling tired; it's an exhaustion that persists even after a good night's sleep. Tasks that were once simple now feel monumental, and the thought of facing another day can be overwhelming.
How Self-Care Helps:
Rest is non-negotiable when dealing with exhaustion. However getting good quality sleep isn’t always easy or possible when the sleep-wake cycle has been disrupted. By creating a relaxing routine that takes only a minute or two to get you started is a great place to begin. Here are some ways to start that relaxing routine:
What It Is:
A misaligned steady state clouds your mind, making it difficult to concentrate or complete tasks. You might find yourself struggling to stay focused, frequently forgetting things, or feeling like your thoughts are constantly jumbled or chaotic.
How Self-Care Helps:
Incorporate short deep breathing exercises into your routine to clear mental fog. Try a fire breath or Wim Hoff to hyperoxygenate for fast clarity and focus. Taking 3 minutes to change your location/environment throughout the day can significantly improve concentration and mental clarity. The best change option is to go outside, take 3 breaths and notice the sun/moon on your skin, the smell of the air, the stars in the sky or clouds. Don't forget to engage in a different activity to refresh your mind when you are feeling fractured.
What It Is:
When you're in a misaligned steady state, your emotions can become erratic. You may find yourself reacting strongly to minor issues, swinging between anger, sadness, or frustration, and struggling to keep your emotions in check.
How Self-Care Helps:
Emotional self-care is vital. Journaling can be a powerful tool to identify what you are feeling, allow space to process your feelings and to release pent-up emotions. Talking to a trusted friend or therapist can provide relief and perspective. A good rule of thumb before sharing or processing your emotions with another person is to ask them if they have the time and capacity to listen to you share your feelings first. You will also want to set the expectation to best meet your needs in the conversation. For example, do you just want to get your feelings out of your head, are you looking for guidance or is it a mix of both. Be clear with the person you are sharing with and know you can adjust along the way as your needs change. Don't hesitate to take a step back from stressful situations when needed to regain emotional regulation.
What It Is:
A hallmark of a misaligned steady state is the loss of motivation. Activities that once brought you joy and fulfillment may now feel like chores. Delaying action or feeling stuck becomes a daily struggle as the drive to achieve diminishes.
How Self-Care Helps:
Set smaller action steps that align with your current energy levels. Breaking down larger tasks into bit sized bits can be a huge stress and pressure relief. You will get to the end goal faster and with more energy than if you try to tackle big chunks with less energy and resources. Use tools like Goblin Tools to help break down tasks into these smaller more manageable chunks and to help gauge how long something may take you to complete. Celebrate small victories to build momentum and reignite your passion for the tasks at hand. Remember, it's okay to slow down and focus on progress, not perfection.
What It Is:
A misaligned steady state can lead to social withdrawal and self isolation, where interactions with friends, family, or colleagues feel exhausting rather than energizing. You might start avoiding social situations, leading to feelings of isolation and loneliness. This self isolation is a protective action and often feels like the solution to being exhausted, however this can make you feel worse without the right kinds of social connection.
How Self-Care Helps:
Nurture and fuel your social connections by reaching out to those who support and uplift you. Schedule time for activities that allow you to engage with others in a way that feels manageable and positive. It's important to remember that you don't have to navigate exhaustion alone—your support network can play a crucial role in your recovery. Remember that sharing connection time doesn’t have to be in person or for more than 30 minutes at a time. You get to decide and experiment with what works best for you right now. Sharing this approach with your network when you schedule things together is a way to connect even deeper and grow your relationships.

No one seems to ‘get it’. Friends and family think you just need to push through or "self-care" more. Internally, so many people in late identified life (me included) feel broken, ashamed or like they are failing or have never reached their full potential, when all along they've had a brain and sensory system that is different from the masses. It can take a lot of strength to keep going.
